  • 소개/요약Contemplative training is suggested to cause desirable changes to the psychological status. Do higher cognitive activities crucial in everyday life such as reading have effects similar to meditation? The present study involved participants who were not trainees of contemplative practices to examine how everyday reading time and speed may influence self-reported mindfulness and psychological status. A total of 881 Japanese participants completed a battery of five established Japanese versions of questionnaires each concerning mindfulness, subjective wellbeing, depression, positive/negative affect, and empathy. Participants also self-reported reading time per day, daily reading speed, and measured reading time after they had read a well-known Japanese novel. Reading time, and less apparently reading speed, predicted increase in mindfulness, well-being, positive affect, and empathy, and decrease in depression and negative affect. These results suggest that for non-meditators habits of reading is closely associated with desirable psychological status. Reading may originally involve psychological functions comparable to focused attention meditation, and may thus influence psychological status in ways parallel to contemplative practices. Implications for applying the present findings to educational settings and comparisons with various cultural activities are discussed.
