- 소개/요약Shitou Xiqian(700-790) is one of the most influential figures in early Zen development. Receiving tonsure from the Sixth Ancestor Huineng(慧能), and becoming a Buddhist monk as a disciple of Qingyuan Xingsi(靑原 行思), Shitou produced many of the distinguished talents thereafter, such as Yaoshan Weiyan(藥山 惟儼), Danxia Tianran(丹霞 天然), Tianhaung Daowu(天皇 道悟). Later, three of the five schools of Chinese Zen like Ts'ao-Tung(曹洞宗), Yun-men(雲門宗), and Fa-yen(法眼宗) traced their origins back to Shitou. The key concept of Shitou's thought is Buddha nature, and his view of it is characterized by the emptiness(空性) and the mind nature(心性), the main issues which most of the Chinese Buddhists had long since been discussing. Therefore, we can say Shitou's Zen style was based on the fundamental tenet of Buddhism contrary to our expectation that Zen masters would convey the heart seal(心印) directly without depending on any sutras or doctrines. To sum up the characteristic of Shitou's view on Buddha nature, it is the insight of the Middle Way, which considers the relation between 'I' and 'Buddha' as the dynamic one of 'huihu(廻互; mutual inter-penetration of things without hindrance) and buhuihu(不廻互; not Huihu)' between the 'I as appearance' and the 'I as true nature'. And, regarding the theory of mind nature, he takes a stand on the 'Original Enlightenment', which equates the human mind with Buddha. Now, we are going to take a detail survey of the whole contents as follows: In chapter 2, Shitou's thought is defined as that of Buddha nature, and the characteristic of his view on Buddha nature is described as the insight of the Middle Way based on the philosophy of Prajñā and the view of mind nature. Shitou inherited them from Huineng, whose 'Formless Precept' preaching had especially emphasized the philosophy of Prajñā and the view of mind nature, and took over the reality-centered idea from Qingyuan Xingsi, which could be found in his dialog on 'Price of rice in Luling(廬陵)' and 'Being the mind, being the Buddha(卽心卽佛)'.
