  • 소개/요약Over the past few decades, the practice of mindfulness has gained respect and credibility in therapeutic contexts. It has been well researched and has a proven reputation as a therapeutic resource in the treatment of a number of psychological and physical conditions. In the process of establishing a reputation for scientific rigour, however, many within the mindfulness movement have been keen to distance themselves from the religious roots of mindfulness in the Buddhist traditions. This article looks at these roots, in particular, examining the Satipatthana Sutta, the key text on mindfulness in the Buddhist canon. It reconsiders the practice’s origins as a spiritual vehicle, asking if other aspects to the teaching might contribute to the advancement of mental health. This study suggests that mindfulness practice is not only intended to develop here and now awareness and calm, but also to facilitate spiritual advancement. In particular, mindfulness implies remembrance of the non-self quality of the person and the world and of the transient quality of existence. It encourages the deep, honest and ever curious encounter with others, whether human, environmental or psychological, thus facilitating a process of connection and trust building which is itself healing and transformational.
