  • 소개/요약Stress relief is an important part of psychological and physical self-care. An accessible, time limited intervention, such as using a mindfulness app on a smartphone, may provide a convenient, flexible approach to stress relief. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a loving-kindness meditation and a body scan meditation delivered by mindfulness app and their effects on perceived stress, self-compassion, and mindfulness. Twenty-three participants began the study, and 8 participants completed the study. Participants listening to the loving-kindness meditation were compared to participants on a waitlist. This study was a randomized control trial with assessments at pre- and post- (2 weeks) intervention. Participants were asked to listen to a loving kindness-meditation (LKM) or a body scan meditation for 20 minutes per day for 14 days using the Insight Timer mindfulness app on an iOs or Android smart phone. After waiting two weeks, waitlisted participants were also randomized between the LKM or body scan meditation and asked to listen to the meditations for the same frequency and duration as the experimental groups. Changes in stress, mindfulness, and self-compassion were measured with pre- and post- intervention assessments using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Mixed model ANOVAs were used to analyze the data. A significant interaction between LKM and time on perceived stress was found, while no effects on self-compassion or mindfulness were found. This study suggests that listening to LKM on a mindfulness app may reduce stress, but results should be interpreted with caution due to a small sample size. Due to a low adherence rate, using a mindfulness app in the current study was not feasible. Future research should consider using shorter meditation recordings and recruiting a large, diverse sample.
