- 소개/요약This project comprises three articles of 5,000-10,000 words on the topic of psychosis. The first article looks at Western psychology’s approach to what it labels “psychotic disorders” and “psychotic episodes.” To illustrate this for readers, I introduce the stories of multiple people who’ve experienced psychosis, myself included. These stories develop through all three articles to demonstrate aspects of nonordinary states of consciousness and their potential purpose in psycho-social development. The second article explores the overlap of psychosis and spiritual awakening experiences by studying the teachings, practices, and stories of Vedic Hinduism and Zen Buddhism. The third examines the ways Indigenous communities approach people who are having hallucinations, delusions, or exhibiting other behaviors that we might term “psychotic,” and how this often marks them for taking on a shamanic role within the society. Bycomparing three different cultural lenses for this universal human occurrence, I hope to offer insight for people who are experiencing psychosis, people who have family members experiencing psychosis, or clinicians and social workers working with this segment of society so that our culture can consider alternative ways of approaching, treating, and guiding people through the other side.
