  • 소개/요약Several studies were conducted to construct a pencil-and-paper measure of mindfulness, assess its internal consistency and factor structure, and provide evidence of its construct validity. Studies 1 and 2 describe the initial attempts to construct an internally consistent scale. Study 3 suggests that the Langer Mindfulness Scale (LMS) has an acceptable level of internal consistency and is not severely influenced by acquiescence and social desirability response sets. Studies 4 and 5 provide evidence for the long- and short-term temporal stability of the LMS, respectively. Study 6 suggests that those scoring high (vs. low) on the LMS are more likely to overcome the constraining mindsets involved in the Luchins' (1942) water jar task and several insight problem solving tasks. Study 7 suggests that those scoring high (vs. low) on the LMS are not necessarily less likely to form constraining mindsets, but are more likely to overcome them once formed. Study 8 found relationships between the LMS and several other related personality and individual difference assessment instruments, including measures of intelligence, need for cognition, openness to experience, and the tendency to see multiple perspectives. Confirmatory factor analysis conducted on the LMS suggests that the data do not fit the theoretical model well at the item-level but more so at the subscale level. Furthermore, exploratory factor analyses suggest that the LMS is highly dimensional (i.e., the number of item-level dimensions of variability greatly exceeds the number of dimensions prescribed from the LMS'-development. An experimental scale of seven items derived from the first principal component of the LMS replicates most of the findings reported in these studies, has acceptable reliability, and demonstrates a unifactorial structure. Though the stability and construct validity of the LMS are promising, more work is needed to improve the internal structure of the LMS._x000D_
