- 소개/요약While mindfulness approaches can be helpful with Christian psychotherapy clients, much is to be gleaned by a better understanding of their own Christian tradition, and particularly in the Puritan writings on meditation and contemplation. The origins of these twin practices are traced and major works noted. Christian meditation is defined as using the mind to engage God through reading and praying the Bible and similar devotional practices, whereas contemplation is more of an attentive gazing on God and, thus, more experiential. Both head and heart are involved in these practices and serve to move the individual (and others) toward the goals of Christlikeness and glorifying and enjoying God. These practices can prove useful in therapy by helping Christian clients to gain meaning and focus by being more centered on the spiritual ends toward which they aspire to move, avoiding emotional suffering and confusion when their lives are compromised by an unhealthy admixture of earthly pursuits. The article ends with a call to more empirical investigation of Puritan meditation and contemplation.
