  • 소개/요약In Wordsworth's poems the description of a grave, memorial, or ruin can inscribe human life and death into the permanence of landscape and give a spatial fixture to the poems' narrative and reflections. But these memorials also frequently become themselves objects of reflection. The gesture is here interpreted with the ‘Essays on Epitaphs' (1810), in which Wordsworth advances beyond a concern with the normative rhetoric of epitaphs towards more general indications on the meditative structure that informs his poetry of time and death. This study suggests that Wordsworth's images of memorials and ruins correspond to a certain conception of poetic ‘meditation’.
