- 소개/요약Purpose The purpose of this pilot study was to test the feasibility of using Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) techniques to decrease stress and anxiety in caregivers of lung transplant candidates/recipients. Methods and Materials 30 caregivers of lung transplant candidates/recipients were recruited during the hospitalization of their significant other. Each completed the Perceived Stress Scale and State Trait Anxiety Inventory prior to and 4-weeks after receiving a DVD that demonstrated MBSR techniques. Participants were asked to watch the DVD in its entirety and then practice MSBR techniques for a minimum of 5-15 minutes a day for 4 weeks. The DVD was developed by the authors, one of whom was an expert in MBSR. Results Participants were 55.6±13.6 years of age, 77% female, and 93% Caucasian. Most had not participated in a formal stress reduction program. While all agreed to participate, only 15 self-reported they watched the entire DVD and performed the exercises; 6 self-reported they watched some and 9 watched none of the DVD. There were no significant differences in demographic characteristics between caregivers who watched the entire DVD and those who watched some or none of the DVD except age of the caregivers. Caregivers who watched the entire DVD were younger (50.5 vs 60.7 yrs, p=.04). Scores for caregivers who stated they watched the entire DVD and practiced the MSBR techniques as requested (n=15) decreased significantly from pre to post testing for perceived stress (p=.001), state anxiety (p=.003) and trait anxiety (p=.006). Scores for those who watched some or none of the DVD (n=15) did not change significantly. Conclusions Findings of this study suggest that caregivers of lung transplant candidates/recipients can benefit from stress reduction techniques using MSBR. Further study is warranted using a control group and participants followed for a longer time interval.
