  • 소개/요약Background: Many women experience increased levels of stress and anxiety during pregnancy. A growing body of research has shown that high levels of stress and anxiety are associated with negative outcomes for both mother and child, but relatively little research has been done on the effectiveness of interventions to help pregnant women to manage stress and distress. Aim: This paper examines some physiological and psychological effects in pregnancy of a computerised self-help package that teaches relaxation and mindfulness using biofeedback. Methods: Study 1 examined the effects of a single baseline, teaching, and biofeedback session on maternal and fetal physiology in six women late in the third trimester. Study 2 looked at the effects of and consumer satisfaction with the complete, 15-step self-help package in nine women, in a small pre-post design with quantitative and qualitative components. Findings: Study 1 demonstrated that a single teaching session can have an impact on maternal arousal, particularly in training respiration, and was suggestive that fetal heart rate (FHR) might be responsive to these changes. Study 2 found that the large majority of women reported a positive response to the self-help package and as a group showed positive changes in levels of distress and coping self-efficacy. Conclusion: These studies show the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of a self-help intervention to help women to manage stress and anxiety in pregnancy; this kind of programme appears to be a useful addition to the menu of options midwives can offer to women in order to enhance well-being and reduce distress.
