- 소개/요약The literature is silent about anticipating and safeguarding against the occurrence and impact of unexpected events in the financial services industry - a sector that has been "surprised" unrelentingly in recent years. To generate understanding about how "mindfulness" manifests itself in organizations, a direct-mail questionnaire survey was designed with the unit of analysis a U.S. community bank (under $1.5 billion in assets). Previously tested scales for main constructs and FDIC bank data for performance measures were employed. Building on prior work on High Reliability Organizations (HROs) and the organizational mindfulness that guides them, the findings of 151 bank executives verified the five dimensions of organizational mindfulness as being meaningful. The findings also raised the issue of the dialectic tension that exists between mindfulness and mindlessness, thereby raising potential vulnerabilities with signal detection capabilities and providing support for discriminating performance. Overall, the model raises the need for management control and governance, calling for more "mindfulness" on the part of bankers to ensure ongoing reliability. The unifying conceptualization provides a foundation for future studies to advance the progression of organizational mindfulness.
